real genius

Went to listen to my sis the other night -- she plays in a volunteer band with Metro State (can't seem to find the link right now) -- and it was very enjoyable.  I've been to her performances before, but something about this particular performance struck a tone (no pun intended) with me.  Big band music is so rare these days, but it's so cool to enjoy live.  I must be getting old.

While the band was playing something from Strauss, I came to the conclusion that a good composer is an absolute genius, right up there with Sir Isaac and Albert.  I don't think I could write a piece for a single instrument (save for a TAP TAP -- TAP TAP TAP for a single snare drum), let alone multiples or dozens of instruments.  But composers have the ability to listen, digest, and create complex, multi-dimensional music.  It just boggles my mind... writing 9/10/11 different pieces all to be played at the same time to create one score.  I can't wait for her next performance.

the light

So, there's a light at the end of the tunnel that is this remodel.  We finally have countertops!  And they look great.  It was quite a wait (counter templating was pushed back 4+ weeks and installation was pushed back one week), but the wait was worth it.  I love the fact they stand out without grabbing your attention.

Now, about those floor installers.... ;)

gone fishin'

For the fourth year in a row, the Nuggets are going fishing after the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.  No big surprise really... they don't match up favorably with the Spurs, nor with the their style of play.  I thought the series was over at halftime of game 3 in Denver -- I was at the game and the Spurs were in the lockeroom for all of four minutes during halftime.  I'm pretty sure this is the entirety of Popovich's halftime speech...

Spurs:  *mostly quiet... a little laughter about Ginobli's bald spot or some meaningless joke*
Popovich: "Okay guys, get some fluids, grab a seat"
Popovich (very seriously): "Just keep playing YOUR game"
Spurs: *silence*
Popovich: "Let's go get ready for the 2nd half"

And just as Karl was beginning his sermon on getting in the paint and taking care of the ball, the Spurs were back on the court shooting and warming up.  There was nothing for Popovich to tell them.  They were loose, relaxed, and new they were going to win by doing nothing more than playing basketball.

A few other random thoughts about the Nugs/Spurs series:

- I have to confess, I really like the Spurs team.... except for freakin' Ginobli.  I like Finely (such a smooth shot with a quick release, but he never rushes), Big Shot Bob, Big Fundamentals, Brent Barry, even Mr. Eva Longoria.  I have a struggle within -- I want to see them win the title, but I also want to see freakin' Ginobli get clothes-lined or fall into a well or something.

- Bravo to George Karl for benching JR Smith (although I wish he hadn't been so public about it).  JR's shot selection -- especially in the Spurs series -- just murdered the Nugs.  I couldn't believe he jacked up a three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining in game 4.  With the Nugs down just 4 points and plays drawn up for Melo (who was 11-17 shooting at that point) and/or AI, JR gets the inbounds pass and fires away with a guy in his grill. And Karl pulled out what hair he has left.  All the media was concerned about Melo and AI during the Melo-AI experiment, but overlooked JR.  He's the one guy on the team who really struggled to accept his role in the changed dynamic.  More than a couple times this year he pulled his Game 4 stunt and tried to be 'da man' by forcing the big shot near the end of a game.  JR must be out of his mind if he thinks he's going to upstage Melo and AI.

- The Spurs did a great defensive job of clogging the middle.  I know Karl was telling his team to get into the paint, but there was no where to go.  Melo and Nene did a decent job scoring in the paint in TONS of trafic.  Conversely, on offense, the Spurs had good spacing, which opened up lanes for Parker and freakin' Ginobli.  Guess that's what hitting some outside shots will buy your team.  Alas, the Nugs are still searching for that role-player who can consitently hit a medium to long range jumper.

- Does any team get more favorable calls from the refs than the Spurs?  No.  I'm glad the Altitude announcers can stay as referee-impartial as they do.  I know I can't.
